Upon release, it received highly positive reviews from critics and was one of the highest-grossing Bengali films of 2011 and considered as a cult film among the Bengali audience. It brought back the thriller genre to Bengali cinema after a long time. The core plot of the film was loosely based on the 1995 David Fincher's crime-thriller Seven.
The sequel to the film, Dwitiyo Purush, was released on 23 January 2020 and a spin off, Dawshom Awbotaar, was released in 2023. It was directed by Srijit Mukherji with Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Abir Chatterjee, and Raima Sen reprising their roles.
