2023 Yatenga Province clashes
On 5 September 2023, dozens were killed in clashes in the Yatenga Province of Burkina Faso. Efforts of the Burkina Faso Armed Forces to retake areas of the province from Islamist militants linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State lead to the deadliest violence of the year in the country. Those killed in the fighting included 17 Burkinabé soldiers, 36 militiamen from the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, and several dozen militants from the Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin.
