The school was originally named after the City of Vaughan, which was named after Benjamin Vaughan. After complaints that Benjamin Vaughan had associations with slavery, the York Region District School Board renamed this school in honour of Hodan Nalayeh, a Somali-Canadian journalist. The school services a very diverse and multicultural community. Its motto is "Ficta Fiunt Res Gestae" (Turning dreams into action).
