  • Eight people are killed and five others injured in a prison riot and shootings at a food shop and a pizzeria in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Two other premises are set on fire. (MSN) (CBS News)
  • At least a dozen vehicles are burned and several streets are blocked in the state of Baja California, mainly in the cities of Tijuana, Mexicali and Ensenada. This is the fourth major incident in the last week where arson and blocked streets have been reported. (KGTV)
• Stabbing of Salman Rushdie
  • Anglo-Indian writer Salman Rushdie is attacked at a public event in Chautauqua, New York, United States, sustaining multiple stab wounds to the neck and abdomen. The suspect is arrested by New York State Police. (Reuters) (AP)
