While Vuong was nominated as a Liberal Party candidate, the party disavowed him days before the election, following reports of an ongoing lawsuit against him and his face-mask producing company TakeCare Supply, as well as a sexual assault charge from 2019. Vuong failed to disclose either during the party's internal vetting process. As nominations had already closed by that point, Vuong remained on the ballot as a Liberal and was elected. Vuong beat Norm Di Pasquale, the NDP candidate in Spadina-Fort York, by less than 1,400 votes.
Adding to the confusion Vuong's website and social media profiles don't expressly list him as an Independent.
Vuong has indicated in comments to the True North Centre, a far-right media and advocacy organization, that he may be looking towards running for the Conservative Party of Canada for the next election.
Prior to entering politics, Vuong worked in the business and finance industry and served as a reserve officer in the Royal Canadian Navy.
