They belong to Ekthariya subcaste that is widely accepted to be of Patrilineal Rajput & Chhetri origin, which is in contrast to Bahuthariya (multiple clan) Chhetri subcaste which is of patrilineal Khas origin. They were one of a subcaste of the Tagadhari Chhetri community of Mandavya Gotra. They were considered as one of a Noble(Bhardar) family in Chhetri clan throughout the Nepalese history of Gorkha Kingdom. They belong to Jharra Chhetri (a subgroup within the Chhetri caste i.e pure Chhetri).Katwals are Jharras which means they have ancestral kshatriya geneology unlike many other Chhetris (Khatri) who have brahmin surname and other Chhetris who mixed with Janajatis.
