John Towneley (politician)
Colonel John Towneley DL (16 February 1806 – 21 February 1878) was a wealthy English Gentleman from an old Roman Catholic, Lancashire family. He entered the United Kingdom parliament for the Whig Party, and later commanded the 5th Royal Lancashire Militia.

He was made deputy lieutenant for Lancashire on 10 May 1834. In 1876, he inherited the family trustee seat at the British Museum.
