    His success came primarily by a series of popular sociopolitical works, known as the "Inside" books (19361972), including the best-selling Inside U.S.A. in 1947. However, he is now best known for his memoir Death Be Not Proud (1949), on the death of his teenage son, Johnny Gunther, from a brain tumor.
