In 2023 Johnson defeated Lacombe City Councilor Chris Ross and paramedic Dusty Myshrall to win the UCP nomination in Lacombe-Ponoka. Johnson is a former registered nurse, and more recently a small business owner and mother. Upon winning her seat in the provincial election she stated "It's a humble privilege to gain the trust and votes of the constituents of Lacombe-Ponoka and the role of MLA is one I take with all seriousness," said Johnson. "It's my intent to work hard, to represent all constituents, and speak on their behalf."
Speaking at an event on September 1, 2022, Johnson compared the presence of transgender children in schools to "adding a teaspoon of feces to a batch of cookies." After the remarks were revealed, and before the election, UCP party leader Danielle Smith said that Johnson would not sit with the caucus if elected.
