Hyundai claims the "N" refers to two elements. First, the Namyang district in South Korea, home of Hyundai's Global Research & Development Center where the brand 'N' was founded; second, the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany, home to Hyundai's European Technical Center and where all the 'N' models are tested. The 'N' logo was inspired by the shape of chicanes in racing circuits.
The first 'N'-branded vehicle produced was the i30 N, which debuted in 2016.
