In contrast to the band's previous album, Love, which had an almost consistent garage rock sound, Da Capo features a wide range of musical styles, being also regarded as one of the first examples of "jazz rock". Although it was not a commercial success, critical response to the album is generally positive; however its reputation over the years has been largely overshadowed by Love's third studio album, Forever Changes (1967).
