The film is a Telugu adaptation of Sailesh Dey's Bengali play Joymakali Boarding. Upon release, the film received widely positive reviews for its close-to-life performances by the lead actors, which bought a rather comical storyline a sense of authenticity at a time when the industry was being filled with unnecessary commercial fillers. It was successful at the box office, and went on to gather a cult following. Naresh went onto to win Nandi Special Jury Award for his performance in the film. It was later remade into Kannada as Bombat Hendthi (1992) and Tamil as Aanazhagan (1995).
