Founded in 1827 as Emu Bay, Burnie's name, attributed by early settlers, arose from their sighting of emus along the riverbanks, despite lacking a direct correlation with the bird itself in Aboriginal nomenclature. The township was renamed Burnie in November 1842, after William Burnie, then director of the Van Diemen's Land Company.

Burnie is governed by the City of Burnie local government area.
