The BMC is India's richest municipal corporation. Its annual budget exceeds that of some of India's smaller states. Established under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act of 1888, the BMC is responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city and some suburbs. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has been formed with the functions of improving the infrastructure of the town.
