Balladur jurisprudence

The "Balladur jurisprudence," named after former French Prime Minister Edouard Balladur, is an unwritten rule according to which a member of the French government who has been indicted in a judicial affair should resign from his functions. It is misnamed, as it was in fact the Socialist Prime Minister Pierre Bérégovoy who imposed this for the first time by forcing Bernard Tapie, then Minister of the City, to resign in May 1992. That political custom effectively came to an end when Emmanuel Macron, despite abiding to the rule in the first part of his presidency, chose to maintain his confidence in Minister of Justice Dupond-Moretti when indicted in 2021 over suspected conflict of interest.
