Ashiko (band)

A South African band with six members: Alpheus Mofokeng (lead vocals), Thomas Tladi (guitar), Innocent Hala (keyboards), Diliza Maneli (keyboards), Bonakele Mbambisa (keyboards) and Skipper Shabalala (guitar). The name ‘Ashiko’ translates to “world of time”, and may have been influenced by Hugh Masekela's cover of OJ Ekemonde’s ‘Ashiko’ on The Boy’s Doin’ It (1975). The band was signed to Teal Records.

Ashiko has been categorised under labels such as African disco, R&B, bubblegum soul, synth, boogie and champeta.
