At the 2006 census, its population was 3,910 in 991 households, when it was a village in Chehel Chay Rural District. The following census in 2011 counted 4,893 people in 1,350 households. The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 4,780 people in 1,428 households. It was the most populous village in its rural district.
After the census, the village of Alqajar was elevated to the status of a city.
