The 2024 championship is scheduled to begin with county tournaments in April and end with the All-Ireland Final on 21 July.
Limerick will enter the championship as defending champions, having won the previous four championships. They will attempt to be the first team in history to win five in a row, a feat never achieved in hurling, and previously only attempted by Cork in 1945 and Kilkenny in 2010. Coincidentally, it was Tipperary who ended both these counties' attempts at the "Drive for Five".
